How to group questions inside a form

Modified on Fri, 12 Aug 2022 at 04:56 PM

In this article, we will explain to you how you can create question groups and add questions to the groups that you've created. This is so that the user will see multiple questions on their screen, rather than a single question each screen.

This is useful if you have multiple data points you want to capture, but would rather do it on one screen (for example address, where you have Street name, Suburb, Municipality etc).

How to group questions inside a form

By default, questions are presented one-by-one to a participant. However, in some cases you might want to group questions together for a better user experience or other reason. If we are grouping questions, the questions will be presented on a single page for the participants. This could be helpful for long forms or for a set of questions that are similar (such as address).

You need to follow the steps underneath to group questions inside a form.

Step 1: Creating question groups

  • On your form that is not published yet, click on the Question Group tab and click on + Add question group.
  • You can now give your question group a name, that can later be used to identify which questions belong to a certain group. Type in the question group name and press Save.
  • Your question group is now created. Go back to the Questions tab, so that we can start adding questions inside group(s).

Step 2: Add questions to a question group

  • Now when you add a question, you are able to select if the question belongs to a group. Select the group that you want the question to be part of and save the form. In the image below you can see the drop down in the bottom right of the screen, use this drop down to select which question group the question belongs to.
    • You can always remove a question from a group by selecting the blank option in the dropdown.
    • Certain question types can't be added to a question group, because they require a single-screen interface (e.g. video question type). The question group dropdown won't be visible for these question types
Please note that questions that are part of a group need to sit next to each other. It is not possible to group questions in case they are not coming directly after each other. In case you want a question to be part of a group, then make sure that in the list of questions that it is directly after a question from the existing group, otherwise you will get an error while trying to save the form.

Underneath is an example of how the interface will look for participants:
